How Long Should You Keep Your Make Up
People ask me all the time how long should you keep your make up? In truth there aren’t any laws that say make up manufacturers have to put expiration dates on there products.
There are however recommended shelf lives of products and I am going to go through those with you today.
First up is mascara! One of the make up products that potentially harbours the most bacteria. You should only keep your mascara for 3 months. I see tips on Instagram, Pinterest and many other places on what you can do if your mascara has dried out. The only thing you should do if it has dried out is throw it away! Don’t add water, eye drops, heat it up or anything else. The risk of infection from bacteria in mascara is very high.
You can keep your eye pencils for 2 years. A good way to keep them clean and free from bacteria is to sharpen them.
Next up is eye shadow, blushers and powders. For any cream products the recommended shelf life is 1 year. For powder products it is 2 years.
You can keep both lipsticks and lip pencils for 2 years. Again with the pencils sharpen them to keep them clean.
For oil free foundations and liquid/cream concealer the recommended shelf life is 1 year. For moisturising foundations and stick concealers it is 18 months.
If you have any kind of eye infection (which are usually highly contagious) you need to throw away any products and brushes you used at the time. Be sensible, if your make up has dried out then get rid of it. If it looks funny or smells funny then get rid of it. Make up should be stored in a cool dry place. DO not store your make up in the bathroom, this is the perfect environment for breeding bacteria.
Keep your brushes and sponges clean as they can transfer bacteria easily. There are many brush cleaners on the market but you can also make your own. I have a video on my YouTube channel here to see how to clean your brushes at home (don’t judge it’s an old video). You can also get daily cleaners that you can use in between full cleaning of your brushes. I like the M.A.C brush cleaner.
For your cleanses, creams and moisturisers have a look at the bottle. You should see a symbol that looks like a jar with the lid off and it will say something like 6M or 12M.
You can see this product is good for 24M or 2 years. This is the indicator of how long you can keep it once the product is opened. The same rules apply here. If it looks funny, smells funny or gives your skin some kind of reaction then it is time to throw it away.
So if you have ever asked anyone how long should you keep your make up?, I hope I have successfully answered your questions.
Have a lovely day guys
